Weed in Madrid: a plain-language guide for visitors
Searching for weed in Madrid? Here is what to know about cannabis clubs, the law, safety and etiquette, without the myths.
The basics
How does weed in Madrid work?
Madrid has no coffee shops like those in the Netherlands. Cannabis is accessed through private cannabis social clubs: closed, non-profit associations for adult members. You cannot walk in off the street. You apply, you are approved and you sign the club rules.
Anyone offering weed on the street, in bars or through messaging apps is operating outside this model. Street sales are illegal, quality is unknown and tourists are common targets for scams and fines.
What is a cannabis club in Madrid?
A cannabis club (club cannábico) is a private association where members consume among themselves. It is not open to the public, does not advertise products or prices and operates under strict rules. Read more on whether weed is legal in Madrid.
Practical tips
Tips for a safe first visit
Apply ahead of time
Send your membership request before you arrive. Approval is personal and never instant.
Bring valid ID
You must be 18 or over and show a passport or national ID.
Do not consume in public
Public consumption can be fined. Stay inside the club or a private space.
Plan your journey home
Do not drive after consuming. Taxis and public transport are easy in Madrid.
Start low, go slow
Especially if you are new. Hydrate, eat and take your time.
Do not travel with it
Leave cannabis behind when you travel; it cannot cross borders or board planes.
